Diamond Core Drilling – the safety benefits

Tracy Diamond Core Drilling

Do you know what the safety benefits are for using diamond core drilling versus other drilling techniques?

The team at National Drilling Services has a great deal of experience in supporting the UK construction industry with drilling, cutting, sawing, sealing and demolition services. In fact our reputation is well known across the UK for this, with many clients repeatedly using our services across many different sites.

We often discuss in our articles the benefits of particular methods of drilling or sawing, such as diamond core drilling, but maybe you are unaware of the safety benefits for these techniques?

When we talk or in this case write about diamond core drilling we invariably highlight the accuracy of the cutting as well as the speed of this technique. From a client perspective these points are both important in getting the hole drilled precisely whilst keeping in time with the work schedule.

However as health and safety is probably higher on site manager’s agenda than ever before, following the pandemic, we should also draw your attention to the safety benefits of diamond core drilling. The main health and safety issues associated with any kind of drilling or cutting relate to noise, dust and vibration, so let’s look at each of these in turn in relation to diamond core drilling.

  • Noise – although we regularly use the diamond core drilling method to drill through very tough materials such as reinforced concrete, it only emits a minor noise level, which is not only a safety benefit to the operator and those working around them, but also means it is less disruptive than other methods so can be used at any time of the day or night, helping to keep to tight timetables and enabling drilling to be carried out around other site activities.
  • Dust – our diamond core drilling technique means there is only a minimum amount of debris, so less risk of dust inhalation, as well as less mess to clear away, so it is ideal for all workers employed in roles near to the drilling site.
  • Vibration – HAVS or Hand-arm vibration syndrome is caused by prolonged periods using a percussive machine or power tool. Due to the technique we use for diamond core drilling the HAVS risk is low so once again it is the best method for the operator to use.

A versatile technique of drilling, with good safety records, diamond core drilling also has the benefit of being powered in different ways. We can use electricity, hydraulic methods or power the diamond core drilling machine by air, according to what is available and what suits the environment the best. You can find out more about our diamond core drilling services or alternatively just give our team a call to discuss your particular site needs on 0161 443 2822.
