The Importance of Expansion Joint Cutting

Tracy Expansion Joint Cutting

expansion joint cuttingExpansion joint cutting may not sound like a particularly inspiring topic, but it is a very important factor in the longevity of concrete structures.  It is important to ensure that expansion joint cutting is performed within a tight time window of the concrete being poured.  At National Drilling Services our operatives are trained to operate our precision cutting equipment and have the knowledge and experience to know when expansion joint cutting procedures need to be employed. Our standard recommendation is that expansion joint cutting for a concrete slab takes place within 24 hours of the concrete being poured.  However, this is dependent on a number of factors.

Factors impacting the timing of expansion joint cutting

The main factors which can impact the timing of expansion joint cutting taking place are the weather, humidity and local environmental factors.  The reason for this is their effect on the time it takes for the concrete to set and dry.  Some other factors which also impact the timing of expansion joint cutting are:

  • How deep does the expansion joint need to be cut?
  • What is the width required for the expansion joint?
  • The size or area of the floor or surface that has been poured and the number of cuts required

These questions and factors are usually defined in the site plans by the structural engineer.

Expansions joint cutting for super flat floors

National Drilling Services works alongside many of the top floor laying companies all around the UK and even beyond.  Working with the major players in the industry we have built up a reputation for our skill and experience in expansion joint cutting for all kinds of concrete floors and ground surfaces both internal and external.  Our reputation has even stretched to the Channel Islands where we have worked on a number of sites to provide expansion joint cutting.  The National Drilling Services operatives understand the strict parameters and tight tolerances involved particularly in the laying of super flat floors.  We also regularly provide expansion joint cutting services for transport yards and other outdoor facilities.

To find out about National Drilling Services you can read more about our services and experience on our website.
